The Pimoroni Infrared (IR) break-beam sensor is a simple and reliable solution for detecting motion and objects. The sensor consists of two parts: an IR emitter and a receiver. The emitter produces infrared light that is invisible to the human eye, and the receiver detects this light. When a non-transparent object passes between them, the beam is broken and the receiver outputs a signal indicating the event.
This 5 mm IR version operates at distances of up to 50 cm. The sensor can be powered with either 3.3 V or 5 V, with 5 V providing improved range. The receiver uses an open collector output, so a pull-up resistor is required for digital signal reading. In most microcontrollers, this can be implemented using an internal pull-up resistor. If needed, a separate 10 kΩ resistor can be used. The sensors are supplied with tinned bare wire ends.
